Brian J. G. Pereira is a veteran biopharmaceutical and healthcare leader with experience in financing and growing companies. He is currently President & CEO of Visterra Inc. an innovative biotechnology company in Waltham, MA. He is an Adjunct Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine, the Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences, and the Tufts Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI).
He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Visterra Inc. and as Chairman of NephroPlus Ltd in India. Until November 2011, he was the President and CEO of AMAG Pharmaceuticals in Lexington, MA. At AMAG, Dr. Pereira raised four financing rounds at increasing valuations, and built the clinical development, manufacturing, supply-chain, and commercial infrastructure for the company’s iron therapy product for anemia. He had previously served as President & CEO of the physician corporation at Tufts Medical Center and interim Chief Operating Officer at Tufts Medical Center in Boston.
He is the former President of the National Kidney Foundation (USA), and member of the Board of Directors for ten years. He served as Chairman of the Board of the Harvard-MIT Biomedical Enterprise Program (BEP), and a Member of the Board of Advisors of the Harvard-MIT Health Sciences & Technology (HST) Program. Dr. Pereira has an extensive knowledge of kidney disease and the factors affecting treatment and reimbursement.
He served as an Assistant Editor for Seminars in Dialysis, Associate Editor for Advances in Renal Replacement Therapy and Editorial Boards of all the major scientific journals in nephrology and transplantation. He is a world-renowned researcher and educator in the field of nephrology. He was the Editor of the widely read textbook “Chronic Kidney Disease, Dialysis and Transplantation” which is the companion to Brenner & Rector’s “The Kidney”. He has authored over 200 scientific publications. He received his MBBS from St. John’s Medical College, Bangalore, India; MD (Internal Medicine) and DM (Nephrology) from the Post Graduate Institute (PGI) Chandigarh, India; and MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, Evanston, IL
