Raymond Chung, M.D., is Director of Hepatology and the Liver Center at Massachusetts General Hospital, Vice Chief of Gastroenterology, and Kevin and Polly Maroni MGH Research Scholar. Raymond is also a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. In 2021, he served as President of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases. Raymond completed his B.A. at Harvard College and his M.D. from Yale University School of Medicine. He completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Johns Hopkins and a fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Massachusetts General Hospital. Raymond is board certified in Gastroenterology, Internal Medicine, and Transplant Hepatology, all by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Raymond has been internationally recognized for his fundamental and translational research in viral hepatitis, particularly in HCV and HBV infection. His laboratory has elucidated the basis for the observed accelerated liver disease pathogenesis in persons with HIV. Raymond has also led important work defining biomarkers and gene signatures for persons at high risk for liver disease progression and liver cancer and designed therapeutic studies to prevent this progression.
