Job Title: Medical Assistant Internal Medicine

Shift: Full Time

Job Summary:

Under the direction of Internal Medicine physicians, helps in the delivery of excellent patient care to our community, ensuring optimal well-being, health, and safety of our patients in accordance with patient care standards, guidelines, and the delegation of medical services as defined by State Medical Practice Act.  This position performs a wide variety of patient care activities including, but not limited to, maintenance of clinical record and documentation, administering medications, giving injections, performing EKGs, wound dressing, and taking vital signs.  This role will assist in front office duties and scheduling testing and/or patient appointments. Medical Assistant is required to conduct all job responsibilities consistent with policies, procedures, and in compliance with all applicable laws or mandates relating to patient care and activities.

Reports to:  Supervising physician, Internal Medicine Team Lead, Director Business Office

Essential Job Functions

  1. Provides excellent customer service skills by greeting patients and the community in a respectful manner.
  2. Prepares & reviews patient charts for upcoming visits by verifying that all diagnostic test results, hospital reports, and other medical records are correct and up to date.
  3. Measures vital signs such as pulse rate, respiration, blood pressure, weight, and height.
  4. Performs departmental-related clerical duties such as checking inventory, stock supplies, track referrals, and answer phones as needed.
  5. Must possess the ability to troubleshoot and resolve problems promptly.
  6. Possesses problem-solving skills, basic computer skills, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  7. Engage with fellow staff and patients in a professional manner.
  8. Provides efficient and effective delivery of patient care and coordination of day-to-day clinical operation.
  9. Records patient interview, history, and chief complaint. Prepares patients for examinations and procedures.
  10. Observes patients and reports adverse reactions to medication or treatment to medical personnel in charge.
  11. Informs physician of patient reported changes to aid in the ongoing assessment and plan of care for patients and charts objectively.
  12. Collects specimens, such as urine, blood, and sputum, from patients for testing and may perform routine laboratory tests on samples. Including phlebotomy skills.
  13. Maintains supplies, equipment, stocking, and sterilization of instruments and disposes of waste appropriately.
  14. Maintains examination rooms, including minor cleaning, stocking of linens and removal of dirty supplies and linens.
  15. Participate and support the clinic and hospital Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) program.
  16. Participates in 80% of appropriate organizational meetings and trainings.
  17. Other duties may be assigned to support the Internal Medicine Team Lead and Director Business Office.
  18. Demonstrates the spirit of the philosophy, mission, and values of the hospital through words and actions and implements them into departmental processes, programs, and the working environment.
    1. Applies the principles and values of customer service and continuous quality improvement while performing day to day activities of the position.

    2. Maintains and protects confidentiality regarding all aspects of patient care, personnel and strategic issues.  Adheres to Confidentiality Policy.

    3. Maintains positive working relationships and fosters cooperative work environment.  Adheres to the hospital’s Guidelines for Appropriate Conduct in the HR Manual.

    4. Follows through on problems that may compromise effective job performance by using appropriate chain of command.

Minimum Requirements

Education:  High School Diploma or GED

Certification, Licensure:  Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) preferred. Current CPR certification.

Experience, Knowledge and Training: 

One (1) year recent experience in primary care setting preferred.

One (1) year clinical health care experience required.

Physical Requirements

Requires frequent bending, reaching, squatting, kneeling, moving, lifting of patients and/or equipment up to fifty (50) pounds and sufficient manual dexterity to operate therapeutic equipment and computer.  Must be able to stand for long periods at a time. 

Working Conditions/Environmental Exposures

Exposure to environmental hazards such as chemicals, solvents, needles, needle containers, sharps, blood, body fluids, various infections/communicable diseases, infectious medical waste, radiation and/or radioactive materials and/or radioactive waste, proximity to moving mechanical parts.  Protective clothing/equipment may be necessary.

ASH IMMUNIZATIONS AND VACCINATIONS REQUIREMENTS – Aligns with CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) for Healthcare Personnel

Hepatitis B- Lab evidence of immunity to Hepatitis B or three doses Hep B vaccine at appropriate intervals

Influenza- mandatory from November 1st through March 31st each year

Measles, Mumps, and Rubella - Lab evidence of immunity to Measles, Mumps, and Rubella or 2 doses of MMR Vaccination

Varicella (chickenpox) - Lab evidence of immunity to Varicella or 2 doses of Varicella Vaccine

Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (Tdap) - documented proof of immunization

Tuberculosis Screening- All new-hires undergo a two-step TB skin test
