Jan Rosing

Dr. Rosing studied biochemistry at the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He specialized in enzymology and enzyme kinetics in the laboratory of Prof. E.C. Slater and received a PhD on a thesis entitled “Thermodynamics and mechanism of oxidative phosphorylation”. Dr. Rosing continued research on oxidative phosphorylation in the laboratory of the later Nobel Prize winner Prof. P.D. Boyer at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). In 1977 he moved to the Faculty of Medicine of Maastricht University, Maastricht, The Netherlands where he became chairman of the Department of Biochemistry in 1995 and professor of biochemistry in 1997. In Maastricht he studied the biochemistry of blood coagulation and gained international reputation with investigations on the structure-function relationships of proteins involved in thrombosis and hemostasis. In the 1990’s the focus of Dr. Rosing’s research gradually moved to more physiological systems e.g., blood plasma and assay systems were developed that enabled detailed studies on the etiology of thrombosis. This led amongst others to a plausible biological explanation for the increased thrombosis risk in users of combined or contraceptives and detailed insight in thrombotic mechanisms associated with hereditary thrombophilia. Dr. Rosing has been chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Dutch Thrombosis Foundation (2006-2015) and acted/acts as advisor of several companies on issues concerning cardiovascular diseases.
