Mustafa Abualsaud

Mustafa Abualsaud, Ph.D., is an accomplished applied researcher specializing in information retrieval and natural language processing. Currently serving as an Applied Researcher in the CTO Office at Bloomberg since April 2024, Mustafa previously held the position of Senior Applied Research Scientist at Thomson Reuters from November 2021 to March 2024, where contributions included leading the modernization of the Practical Law search system and developing the first Practical Law RAG system. Prior experience encompasses a PhD candidacy at the University of Waterloo, focusing on query abandonment and related topics, as well as roles in software development and research assistance during earlier academic pursuits. Mustafa holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, alongside a Master’s degree and a Bachelor of Science degree in the same field from the same institution and University of Victoria, respectively.
