Richard Gurlitz has been a Chapel Hill resident since 1979. He is the founding member of Gurlitz Architectural Group. Richard’s undergraduate degree in Art History from the Johns Hopkins University, coupled with a design studio under a beaux arts professor at Columbia University, directed him to pursue architecture as a profession. The program at the University of Wisconsin, strong in community planning and design, set his path for bringing strong design features to community projects. Richard is responsible for all design efforts in the architectural firm. He has been licensed in North Carolina for thirty years. Richard and his wife Carey have three children. His oldest daughter is a lawyer in New York City, his other daughter works with the Center for Child Traumatic Stress at Duke, and his son, the youngest is a recent graduate of UNC Law School. Richard’s wife Carey has long been associated with healthcare, currently an engineering supervisor with the Department of Health Service Regulation in Raleigh. Richard has served as Treasurer with the Chapel Hill Public School Education Foundation, Coach for The Triangle Youth Hockey Association, Education Chair on the Judea Reform Board of Trustees, Chair for Chapel Hill School System New Facilities Review Committee, Redistricting committee co-chair Chapel Hill Public School System. Richard also manages a statewide adult ice hockey program – the Carolina Classics – for hockey players in their sixties and seventies.
