Alan Varela

Alan Varela serves as the Director of the Planning Department for the City of Albuquerque, a position held since June 2018. Prior roles include Deputy Director of the Department of Municipal Development and Deputy City Attorney. With a robust legal background, including positions at the Legal Department of the City of Albuquerque and various law firms, Varela specializes in dispute resolution in construction matters, legislative advocacy, and regulatory representation in horse racing. Additionally, as CEO of Bishop Industries, Inc., Varela oversees real estate investment and property development. An alumnus of the University of New Mexico School of Law, Varela holds a Juris Doctor degree with a focus on Business/Commercial Law and Human Rights, complemented by extensive executive experience in strategic planning at US Eagle.
