Jim McGinty

Chairperson at Communicare

James (Jim) McGinty was a Labor member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly from 1990 to 2009, representing the district of Fremantle. He was also the Labor Party leader and Leader of the Opposition from 1994 to 1996. He served as a Minister, most notably as Attorney-General, in the governments of Carmen Lawrence, Geoff Gallop and Alan Carpenter.

Acknowledged as one of Labor’s great reformers, Jim helped achieve the “one vote one value” for the Legislative Assembly, Gay and Lesbian equality in the laws of WA and provision for surrogacy parenting. He established new institutions including the Corruptions and Crime Commission, the State Administrative Tribunal and the Court of Appeal.

Jim is a volunteer with the Fremantle Sea Rescue, Chair of the Lotterywest Board, Chair of the North Metropolitan Health Service, and a member of the Independent Media Council. He also sits on the Boards of Brightwater Care Group and Access Housing. He was awarded a Centenary of Federal Medal in 2003. Jim commenced as Chairperson for the Communicare Board of Management in April 2018.
