About the role:  Are you a collaborative and self-motivated person with strong interpersonal skills, who is enthusiastic and passionate about learning and technology? Do you have a high tech background, and experience drafting patents? If so, we invite you to apply to join our Intellectual Property (IP) team. 

D-Wave’s IP team is responsible for tracking D-Wave’s technological developments, drafting and prosecuting patent applications, and collaborating with all D-Wave departments to ensure IP procedures are followed and D-Wave’s technological leadership position is protected by strong patents. 

You will work with a team that has developed an industry-leading patent portfolio to draft and prosecute patents on a broad range of technologies in collaboration with folks pushing the boundaries of their respective fields. While the primary focus of this role is patent drafting and prosecution, you will also get the opportunity to get involved in other IP-related areas, and to develop business and IP strategy skills. 

What you will do

  • Draft and prosecute patents in a range of technical disciplines
  • Learn about D-Wave’s cutting-edge and evolving technology
  • Identify valuable innovation through collaboration with inventors
  • Develop and nurture positive interpersonal relationships with the IP team and diverse technical teams to build trust and foster cooperation
  • Assist with the management of D-Wave’s IP portfolio
  • Review and identify IP issues in the context of D-Wave's product documentation, marketing materials, presentations and other documents
  • Educate and advise non-IP colleagues on good IP practices and processes
  • Proactively monitor and strategize on IP developments that may impact the business
  • Manage a high-volume workload to ensure the right things get done on time and on budget

About You

  • Passion for working with innovative technology and IP strategy
  • Prior experience drafting patents and prosecuting before a patent office
  • A background in one or more of software, physics, math, computer science or electrical engineering
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Motivation to build and nurture cross-departmental relationships
  • Organizational skills and the ability to manage deadlines and priorities
