Carlton Winfrey is a seasoned journalist with extensive experience in various editorial roles, currently serving as City Editor at the Detroit Free Press since August 2013, overseeing coverage of Detroit city government during its significant municipal bankruptcy. Winfrey has held multiple positions at the Detroit Free Press since November 2002, including Assistant Metro Editor, and has previously worked as City Editor for Gannett and Night City Editor for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Winfrey's editorial expertise is complemented by a commitment to community service, evidenced by a board member role at Mariners Inn, a Detroit residential treatment center, and contributions to the anthology "When Race Becomes Real," detailing personal experiences growing up Black in the South.
