Gary M. Mawe is a Professor of Neurological Sciences at the University of Vermont with additional duties in the Department of Pharmacology and the GI Division of Medicine. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Physiology and Pharmacology at the University of Calgary. Dr. Mawe received his BS in Biology from Pennsylvania State University and a Ph.D. in Anatomy from Ohio State University. He received his postdoctoral training at Columbia University studying the neurobiology and motility of the gastrointestinal tract. Current research interests include the understanding of signaling by the neurotransmitter serotonin in the digestive tract; changes in the gut nervous system in response to and following inflammation; and the mechanism by which smooth muscle function is disrupted in gallstone disease.
