Mike Krames

Mike Krames is a Board Director and Industry Advisor at iBeam Materials, Inc. Mike has over 20 years of experience in technology scouting, assessment, and due diligence for growth market venture financing with a global view and emphasis on clean technology and energy sectors.

Krames began their career as a Chief Technology Officer at Soraa Inc. Mike was the first management team member hired to work with Nobel Prize Winner Shuji Nakamura and other key innovators from the University of California, Santa Barbara, to develop leading LED products for professional directional lighting using a brand new LED materials platform: GaN-on-GaN. Krames established the GaN-on-GaN LED technology direction and performance roadmaps and spearheaded projects to commercialize the technology. Mike was directly involved in venture and strategic fundraising, including successful Series B & C venture capital funding worth more than 100M USD.

Some of Krames’ accomplishments include creating the world’s first LED to surpass halogen and developing practical strategies for using bulk GaN, which improved LED performance by 10X. Mike also supervised bulk GaN ammonothermal growth team and secured funding for it. In addition, Krames recruited a core team of talented technology professionals and senior executives, improved performance to provide the first LED MR16 lamp with true 50-Watt equivalence, and developed an LED roadmap and innovation across substrate, epitaxy, fabrication, and packaging.

Mike Krames has a Ph.D. in Electrical & Computer Engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, an M.S. in Electrical & Computer Engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin. Mike also has a certification from IEEE Educational Activities Certificates in Introduction to Blockchain Technology.
