Mike Quillen

Mike was the Chairman and Founder of Alpha Natural Resources (ANR). ANR became the third largest coal company in America with approximately 13,000 employees and a market cap exceeding two billion dollars. He guided the company through rapid expansion fueled by a series of acquisitions. ANR is the largest exporter of met coal from the US and the third largest producer of met coal in the world. He retired as chairman of the company’s board of directors in 2012. Mike has also been responsible for acquired Virginia operations of Pittston Coal Company, acquired Coastal Coal operations in Virginia, Kentucky, and West Virginia and the merged operations of AMCI in North America. Total production of 25 million tons with total sales 30 million tons. Revenues annually in excess of $1.9 Billion with approximately 3550 employees. He holds a M.S. Degree in Civil Engineering from Virginia Tech and a B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering from Virginia Tech as well. Mike recently received Virginia Tech’s highest honor for his dedication to his alma mater, leadership in the energy industry, and service to his community.
