Tom Shortledge is an experienced patent agent with over 13 years in the IP industry. With expertise ranging from patent preparation and prosecution to portfolio management, Tom has established himself as a valuable resource for inventors seeking protection for new and emerging technologies. Prior to joining the firm, Tom studied electrical engineering at Penn State just before beginning his IP career with the USPTO. Stationed at the office’s headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia, Tom examined applications in the field of speech recognition and natural language computer systems. While he has since expanded into a much broader technology base –electrical, mechanical, medical devices and business methods, for example– Tom continues to leverage this early insight to obtain strong patents on behalf of clients today.
Tom has also taken his skills in-house, previously working as IP Manager for one of the world’s largest computer hardware companies. In this role, Tom was not only responsible for building patent portfolios from the ground up, but also ensuring that the organization’s IP strategy and tactics aligned with corporate vision, market trends and changes in patent law. Additionally, Tom assisted with several complex areas of IP law such as litigation, mergers and acquisitions, and internal competitive and infringement analysis. As a result, clients can rest assured knowing that Tom understands their unique challenges, whether it be budget or time constraints, or simply balancing the interests of technology and the interests of business.
In his free time, Tom enjoys engaging in fitness-related activities, photography and spending time with his children.
