Mareli Claassens is a distinguished research associate professor at the University of Namibia and a member of the Global Young Academy since June 2021. Claassens holds editorial board positions with the Public Library of Science (PLOS) and previously participated as a Harvard LEAD Fellow at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health from September 2021 to August 2022. Claassens has extensive academic background, completing a PhD in Medicine at the University of Amsterdam and a Master's in Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, alongside a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and a Master of Philosophy in Applied Ethics from Stellenbosch University. Prior roles include a postdoctoral fellowship and clinician scientist position at Stellenbosch University from February 2007 to March 2018.
