Dr. Trevor Hastie is the John A. Overdeck Professor of Mathematical Sciences at Stanford University, and is a member of the US National Academy of Science. He is known for his contributions to applied statistics, especially in the field of machine learning, data mining, and bioinformatics.
Dr. Hastie has authored five books, including the widely referenced Elements of Statistical Learning: Data Mining, Inference, and Prediction, and published over 180 articles in the field. His current research focuses on applied statistical modeling and prediction problems in biology, genomics, medicine and industry.
Prior to his appointment at Stanford, Dr. Hastie was a part of the statistics and data analysis research group at what was then AT&T Bell Laboratories. He interned at the Biomath department at Oxford University; the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine; and the Johnson Space Center.
Dr. Hastie earned his MS from University of Cape Town in South Africa (where he is from), his BS from Rhodes University, South Africa and PhD from Stanford University. He has been listed as an “ISI Highly Cited Author in Mathematics” by the ISI Web of Knowledge.
