Advanced Tear Diagnostics has two of the five FDA-approved diagnostic kits to detect dry eye and conjunctivitis by measuring the concentrations of Immunoglobulin E and lactoferrin. The company is finalizing development of a new platform that will improve the detection of ocular disorders, including the ability to test for all five diagnostic tests on one multi-analyte sensor.
The new platform has the capability of diagnosing much more than ophthalmic conditions. The same reader that detects levels of IgE and lactoferrin has the potential to detect cancer, cardiovascular disease as well as other diseases once the specific sensor is developed, using biomarkers, to identify the targeted disease. In fact, there is already a working prototype of a device that can assess glucose levels by drawing tear fluid from the eye. This glucometer will help people living with diabetes to monitor their health.
