Mr. Springer is the retired Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation, whose subsidiary BNSF Railway Company operates one of the largest North American rail networks. He is a Director of Junior Achievement of Chicago; a member of the College of Science Advisory Council at the University of Notre Dame; and Chairman of the Driehaus College of Business Advisory Council at DePaul University. He is a former director of several public and private companies, and has taught and guest-lectured in finance and strategic management at several major universities. Mr. Springer held professional and executive positions with a few companies in consulting and manufacturing industries before joining Santa FeIndustries as its Director of Finance in 1982. He progressed through the finance organization becoming its Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer in1992. He negotiated the financing for the largest bank-led recapitalization that had been done at that time and was a member of the leadership team that subsequently sold off several subsidiaries, created four new publicly-traded companies through tax-free spinoffs, and turned around Santa Fe Railroad from a property that had a questionable future to the company that had the highest return to shareholders in its industry for the five years culminating with its merger with Burlington Northern Inc. When Santa Fe Pacific merged with Burlington Northern Inc. in 1995, Mr. Springer was named Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation, a position he held until his retirement in 1999. In that role he was a member of the leadership team that successfully integrated the Santa Fe and Burlington Northern railroads.
