Marcelo Claure serves as Chief Executive Officer of SoftBank Group International and Chief Operating Officer of SoftBank Group Corp. SoftBank Group invests in the world’s most innovative companies that leverage Artificial Intelligence to redefine all industries to improve people’s quality of life. SoftBank Group is comprised of SoftBank Group Corp., a holding company with a portfolio spanning across multiple sectors including telecommunications, internet service providers, AI, asset fund managers, smart robotics, IoT and renewable energy technology providers among others; the SoftBank Vision Fund, the world’s largest technology growth venture fund investing up to $100 billion to power the Artificial Intelligence revolution; and the SoftBank Latin America Fund, the largest venture fund ever in Latin America, investing $5B in technology growth opportunities throughout the region. Claure, alongside Chairman & CEO Masayoshi Son, oversees the strategic direction of the Tokyo-based company. His primary responsibilities include ensuring Group companies and investments meet their financial and operating objectives, and managing global Group synergies, joint ventures and corporate functions. Claure oversees the vast portfolio of the Group’s operating companies, including Arm, WeWork, Brightstar, Fortress, SB Energy, Boston Dynamics, among others, and SoftBank’s ownership in T-Mobile US. He also oversees the newly formed SoftBank Latin America organization, comprised of the SoftBank Latin America Fund and the Tech Hub, which is responsible for taking Group companies and investment companies into Latin America. In addition, Claure serves as Executive Chairman of WeWork, the world’s largest coworking and space-as-a-service company, where Claure is responsible for overseeing the company’s long-term strategy and growth-led transformation. Claure previously served as President and CEO and then Executive Chairman of Sprint where he is widely recognized for delivering the best financial results in Sprint’s 120-year history and architecting the merger with T-Mobile US. Claure was the founder of Brightstar and built it into the world’s largest global wireless distribution and services company, with operations in more than 50 countries and revenues exceeding $10 billion. Brightstar became the largest Hispanic-owned business in United States history. Claure is a member of the Board of Directors of SoftBank and ARM and serves as Executive Chairman of WeWork, Chairman of Fortress, Chairman of SB Energy Global and Executive Chairman of Brightstar. He also runs Club Bolivar, Bolivia’s most popular and successful soccer team and is Chairman and Owner of Club Internacional de Futbol Miami (Miami Beckham United), the newest major league soccer franchise. Claure was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum, recognized as the Entrepreneur of the Year by several publications, and was appointed to Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year Hall of Fame. He was featured in the Carnegie Corporation of New York’s “Great Immigrants: The Pride of America” initiative, recognizing notable contributions by immigrants to the progress of American society. Claure immigrated to the United States from Bolivia. He received a Bachelor of Science in Economics and Finance and an honorary Doctorate of Commercial Science from Bentley University. He is a member of the 2016 Class of Henry Crown Fellows and Aspen Global Leadership Network at the Aspen Institute. He is also a member of the Presidential CEO Advisory Board of MIT. Claure is married and has six children. Marcelo Claure became a member of our Board of Directors and Compensation Committee on April 1, 2020. He also currently serves as Chief Operating Officer of SoftBank and as Chief Executive Officer of SoftBank Group International. Mr. Claure was Executive Chairman of Sprint prior to the Sprint Combination and had served on the Sprint board of directors since January 2014. Previously, Mr. Claure served as Sprint’s President and Chief Executive Officer, serving as President from August 2014 until January 2018 and as Chief Executive Officer from August 2014 until May 2018. In addition, Mr. Claure has served as a director of SoftBank since June 2017 and currently serves as a director of Arm Limited and as Chairman of Brightstar, each a subsidiary of SoftBank. Prior to joining Sprint, he was Chief Executive Officer of Brightstar, a company he founded in 1997 and grew from a small Miami-based distributor of mobile device accessories into a global business with more than $10 billion in gross revenue for the year ended 2013. Mr. Claure holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Finance and an honorary Doctorate degree in Commercial Science from Bentley University in Massachusetts.
