Lord Shuttleworth is Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Lancashire. He was appointed to this voluntary post as Her Majesty’s representative in the county in 1997. He was chairman of the Association of Lord-Lieutenants from 2008-2018.
Lord Shuttleworth was educated at Eton College and qualified as a chartered surveyor in 1970. He then worked in the City of London in private practice, returning to Lancashire to continue his career in Preston in 1977. He retired from professional practice in 1993.
In 1979, Lord Shuttleworth was appointed a director of the Burnley Building Society, and later as a director of National and Provincial Building Society, serving as chairman from 1993-1995, when it was taken over by Abbey National plc. He became deputy chairman of Abbey National and was a director for ten years until its acquisition by Santander. He then became chairman of the Santander UK Group Pension Fund Trustee Company from 2005 – 2018.
Lord Shuttleworth also served as chairman of the Rural Development Commission, the government agency responsible for the economic and social wellbeing of rural areas of England from 1990 – 1997. In 1997, he was appointed to the Council of The Duchy of Lancaster, serving as chairman from 2005 – 2014.
In the 2011 New Year Honours List, Lord Shuttleworth was appointed Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO) and in 2016 he was appointed by The Queen as a Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter (KG).
