Ian Craddock

Ian joined the University as an Engineering undergraduate in 1989 before undertaking a PhD in electromagnetics. Appointed to a lectureship in 1995 he directed programmes of research in humanitarian landmine detection and then for the diagnosis of breast cancer, successfully commercialised via a University spin-out.

Appointed to a Chair in the Faculty of Engineering, in recent years he has held research leadership roles in academia, including as Director of the flagship £16M EPSRC SPHERE project 2013-2023 and in industry as Director of Toshiba’s Bristol Research Laboratory 2011-2019.

He teaches electromagnetics at undergraduate level and is programme director for a taught masters in Digital Health and for the EPSRC-funded Centre for Doctoral Training in Digital Health & Care. Alongside research interests in engineering, machine learning and healthcare, he has initiated significant new activities in the areas of ethics, coproduction, diversity and inclusion.

He is a panel member for REF2021, a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the IEEE and a Fellow of the Alan Turing Institute.
