Derek McFarland

Derek McFarland is an experienced Arboricultural Officer at Westminster City Council since August 2024, with extensive expertise in arboriculture and education. As an Assessor/Trainer for N.P.T.C. since November 2013, Derek has focused on training industry operatives in ground-based Arboriculture certification. In addition, Derek serves as a Development Consultant for City and Guilds, overseeing the review and enhancement of Level 3 Arboriculture and Forestry Qualifications. Prior to these roles, Derek was a Development Manager at Gristwood and Toms, where a specialization in BS5837 development projects, decay detection, and tree risk management was pursued. Previous experiences include positions such as Deputy Head of the School of Arboriculture at Capel Manor and Course Manager/Lecturer in Level III Arboriculture, alongside early career work as a tree surgeon in urban and European settings. Educational achievements include a Level 6 Professional Diploma in Arboriculture and a Cert in Education from the University of Greenwich.
