Ben Santer

Fowler Distinguished Scholar In Residence at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution

Ben Santer is a renowned atmospheric scientist currently serving as the Fowler Distinguished Scholar in Residence at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution since October 2022 and as a Visiting Research Scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles since October 2021. With extensive experience at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory from August 1992 to September 2021, Santer specialized in developing and applying "climate fingerprint" methods to identify human-caused influences in climate records. Previous roles include postdoctoral research and scientific work at the Max-Planck Institute for Meteorology in Germany, where studies focused on greenhouse gas-induced climate change and paleoclimate research, as well as a project engineer position at Dornier Systems GmbH. Santer obtained a Ph.D. in Climatology from the University of East Anglia, where a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science was also earned.
