Stevan Apter has a diverse range of work experience spanning over three decades. Stevan began their career in 1981 at United Technologies, where they worked as a Programmer specializing in IBM Information Center and Sharp APL installation. Stevan then moved on to Indiana University/Purdue University, where they worked as an Adjunct Professor and Consultant, teaching courses in Logic and Introduction to Philosophy and supervising the selection and installation of a time-sharing system for medical research.
In 1985, Apter joined Security Pacific Financial Strategies as a Programmer, focusing on asset liability management systems and logic programming applications in finance. Stevan later joined Morgan Stanley in 1988 as a Programmer in the Fixed Income Research Department, co-authoring A+, Morgan Stanley's proprietary APL interpreter.
In 1995, Apter joined UBS as part of the k language design team, assisting in the design, implementation, and documentation of k1, k2, and k3. Stevan also worked on developing a parser and k execution engine for SQL92 (the precursor and prototype of KDB). Apter then joined Zurich Insurance Company Ltd in 1997, where they designed and implemented the company's data-warehouse and taught the industry's first course in the K programming language.
Apter joined DFA Capital Management, Inc. in 1999 as a Programmer, where they designed and implemented ADVISE, a parallel/distributed multi-period Monte-Carlo simulation engine for the insurance industry. Stevan also authored K-grid, a fault-tolerant distributed computing system, and co-authored JK, a declarative Java GUI for k.
In 2007, Apter joined Millennium Partners, LP as a Programmer, responsible for senior q/kdb+ programming. Stevan'snotable contributions include designing a distributed q architecture for the firm's real-time position tracking and profit & loss system.
Most recently, Apter worked as a distinguished developer at 1010data, starting in 2015. Overall, their work experience showcases a strong background in programming, data analysis, and system design across various industries.
Stevan Apter pursued their education at New York University from 1973 to 1975, where they obtained a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Psychology and Mathematics. Stevan then continued their academic journey at the same institution from 1975 to 1977, focusing on Philosophy as they pursued an ABD (All But Dissertation) degree. Lastly, from 1977 to 1980, Stevan attended Princeton University, also working towards an ABD degree in Philosophy.
