Matthew Waugh, Ph.D., is an experienced scientist currently serving as a Scientist and Project Lead at Absci since April 2021. Prior to this role, Matthew was a Postdoctoral Research Associate and Lab Manager at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from January 2018 to April 2021, focusing on metalloprotein design and engineering under Professor Yi Lu. Earlier experience includes a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position at the University of Michigan, where mechanistic characterization of Cyanobacterial Aldehyde Deformylating Oxygenase (cADO) was conducted, and a Graduate Student Research Assistant role involving similar research. Matthew holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Biology from the University of Michigan and a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from the University of Virginia. Additional research work includes contributions to green chemistry and the optimization of anti-cancer agents.
