Jim Varner

Director, Software Systems Group at Aclara

Jim Varner has over 20 years of work experience in various roles within the software industry. Jim began their career as a Programmer/Tech Lead at Genelco Software Solutions, where they were responsible for scaling a reinsurance calculation application. Jim also designed an algorithm to calculate risk exposure for similar individuals across multiple insurers.

In 2002, Jim worked as a Contractor at Anheuser-Busch, where they were part of a team designing and implementing a Utility Monitoring Solution for tracking consumption at breweries. Jim developed an algorithm to identify and locate CO2 leaks in breweries using historical consumption data.

Jim joined Aclara in 2006 as a Principal Software Engineer, where they developed and maintained test and field deployment tools. Jim also created an automated SQA test framework and a data-reduction algorithm for firmware updates over powerline connections. Jim later became the Manager of Software Development, Test and Validation Systems, leading teams responsible for maintaining test and deployment tools, as well as verifying performance and scalability of deliverables.

In 2015, Jim became the Director of Software Development at Aclara, coordinating software development and test efforts for an enterprise-class SaaS application. Jim was also a key member of the leadership team implementing Scaled Agile (SAFe) development and served as a Release Train Engineer for an Agile Release Train.

In 2019, Jim was promoted to Director of the Software Systems Group at Aclara. In this role, they manage teams responsible for DevOps, integration tests, test automation, and software performance tests. Jim also served as a Release Manager for on-prem and cloud-based SaaS applications and successfully migrated the software development infrastructure to Microsoft Azure.

Jim Varner attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro from 1996 to 1997, where they pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Systems. Jim also attended N.C. State University, although the specific dates and duration of their enrollment are unknown. During their time at N.C. State University, Jim studied Business Administration and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree.
