James Houts

James Houts serves as a Deputy Attorney General in the Alabama Attorney General's Office, specializing in capital litigation and special prosecutions since January 2013. Houts holds various leadership roles, including Division Chief for the Criminal Appeals Division and acting Division Chief in the Special Prosecutions Division. Additionally, Houts has experience as a Judge Advocate in the United States Army National Guard and previously practiced as a solo attorney. Houts' legal career includes significant roles such as Chief Assistant District Attorney in the 19th Judicial Circuit and Assistant Attorney General in the Capital Litigation Division. Houts earned a Doctor of Law (J.D.) from Tulane University Law School and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Philosophy/Religion from Mississippi State University.
