Mark Smith's work experience begins in 1991 when they worked as a Customer Service Representative for Delta Air Lines, assisting with ticketing, gate operations, and aircraft clearance. In 1996, they joined the Fairfax County Police as a Patrol Officer and served in that role until 2000. From 2001 to 2006, Mark worked as a Flight Officer and Paramedic for the Fairfax County Police Helicopter Division, performing law enforcement missions and medical evacuations. In 2007, they became the Chief Flight Officer and Paramedic for the Fairfax County Police Helicopter Division, a position they held until 2013. During this time, they also served as a Second Lieutenant within the Fairfax County Police, supervising the Helicopter Division and running the Special Operations Medical Program. Mark continued their career with the Fairfax County Police, becoming a Sergeant in 2006 and then transitioning to roles within the Criminal Investigations Section, Internal Affairs Bureau, and Organized Crime and Narcotics Unit as a Second Lieutenant. In 2014, they left the Fairfax County Police and joined the Middle East Broadcasting Networks as a Corporate Security Specialist before being promoted to Director of Security in 2022.

Mark Smith's education history begins in 1982 when they attended Sir John Adamson High School in Johannesburg, South Africa from 1982 to 1986. Following this, they enrolled at Theological Education by Extension College from 1987 to 1989 and obtained a Diploma in Theology. In 1996, they attended Fairfax County Criminal Justice Academy for a year, focusing on Criminal Justice and Police Science. In 2000, Mark briefly attended The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, specializing in Emergency Medical Technology/Technician (EMT Paramedic). Lastly, in 2014, they pursued a program called Leadership in Police Organizations, organized by IACP.
