Byron Purse has worked in a variety of roles in the field of chemistry since 2000. Byron began their career as a Graduate Student at The Scripps Research Institute, where they earned a PhD in Organic Chemistry. Following their PhD, they worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Stockholm University from 2006-2008. Byron then moved to the University of Denver, where they worked as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry from 2008-2013. In 2013, they moved to San Diego State University, where they worked as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry and then Associate Professor of Chemistry, with research interests in unnatural nucleotides as fluorescent molecular probes and for medicinal chemistry, and the controlled binding and release of small molecules from artificial receptors for materials applications, sensing, and supramolecular catalysis. In 2020, they Co-Founded Alida Biosciences.

Byron Purse received their BSc in Chemistry and Biochemistry from the University of Regina in 2000, and their PhD in Organic Chemistry from Scripps Research in 2005.
