Aletha Maybank

SVP & Chief Health Equity Officer at American Medical Association

Aletha Maybank is the SVP & Chief Health Equity Officer at the American Medical Association. Aletha has dedicated their career to fighting for health equity and has worked tirelessly to ensure that everyone has access to quality healthcare.

Maybank began their career as a medical contributor and writer for various publications, including ARISE News, EBONY Media, and HuffPost. In 2010, they became an adjunct/assistant professor at Long Island University's Masters of Public Health Program, where they taught on topics related to health inequities, health communications, public health leadership and management, and community organizing in health.

In 2009, Maybank was appointed as the Deputy Commissioner/Founding Director of the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. In this role, they worked to improve the health of New Yorkers by implementing policies and programs that addressed the social determinants of health. While at the department, they also served as the President of Empire State Medical Assoc - NYS Affiliate of National Medical Assoc (NMA).

In 2018, Maybank was appointed as the SVP & Chief Health Equity Officer at the American Medical Association. In this role, they are responsible for leading the organization's efforts to eliminate health disparities and ensure that everyone has access to quality healthcare.

Aletha Maybank has a MPH from Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, a MD from Temple University - Lewis Katz School of Medicine, and a BS from The Johns Hopkins University. Aletha did their preventive medicine residency at State Univ. New York/Stony Brook and their pediatric residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine Schneider’s Children’s Hospital (now Northwell - Cohen’s Children’s).
