Michael D. Cooper, Esq. has a diverse range of work experience. Michael is currently serving as the Executive Director and Executive Vice President at the American Society of International Law since October 2022. Prior to this role, they held the position of Associate Vice President at the University of Oxford North American Office from February 2017 to October 2022.
From June 2010 to October 2022, Michael worked as the Managing Director at The Ploughshare Group, LLC. Michael also served as a Public Interest Law Scholar at Georgetown University Law Center from September 2005 to May 2010.
In addition, Michael held various roles in different organizations, including being a Special Assistant to the Deputy Associate Solicitor at the United States Department of Labor, Office of the Solicitor in 2009. Michael also served as Director-at-Large and Director of Humanitarian Programs at Mercy Corps from January 2004 to February 2009.
Furthermore, Michael worked as the Director of Development and Communications at Médecins du Monde in 2002. Before that, they were the Director of Human Rights Watch Council at Human Rights Watch from March 2000 to October 2001.
Earlier in their career, Michael held positions such as Grants Coordinator at the International Rescue Committee and Protection Officer at UNHCR, both in 1999.
Michael D. Cooper, Esq. pursued their academic journey with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree in Drama from New York University, which they completed from 1983 to 1986. In 1989, they enrolled at New York University once again, this time to earn a Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in Global Policy and Conflict Resolution, which they successfully obtained in 1993. Additionally, in 1990, Michael D. Cooper pursued a Certificate in Peace Research from the University of Oslo (UiO). Later, from 2005 to 2010, they attended the prestigious Georgetown University Law Center, where they completed their Doctor of Law (J.D.) degree.
