Mariana Blanco

Legal Ocean Analyst - Protected Seas at Anthropocene Institute

Mariana Blanco serves as the International Policy Officer at Global Fishing Watch since February 2024 and is an active member of the Homeward Bound Projects HB7 Team since April 2022. In the role of Legal Ocean Analyst with the Anthropocene Institute since December 2021, Mariana conducts legal research and analysis for Marine Protected Areas. Previously, Mariana coordinated projects for the United Nations Division of Ocean Affairs and Law of the Sea from February 2023 to March 2024 and held the position of Legal Officer at IUCN from November 2020 to October 2021. Mariana's earlier experience includes a fellowship with the United Nations and The Nippon Foundation, policy advocacy management at Fundacion MarViva, and legal consultancy roles focused on environmental and human rights issues. Academic qualifications include a diploma in Energy, Climate Change and Sustainable Development from the University for Peace, a Technicature in Graphic Design from FundaTec, and a Licentiate in Law from Universidad de Costa Rica.
