Sylvain is a Principal Human Systems Engineer and Lead for Aptima’s Cognitive Systems Integration (CSI) capability, which focuses on researching and developing human-AI collaborative systems. His current work focuses on researching tools, skills, and processes that enable human-centered and scientifically-sound collaboration between humans and machine-learning-based artificial intelligence entities including algorithms, synthetic teammates, automated agents, and robots. Additionally, he supervises a portfolio of defense and commercial efforts that transition this research into the work and infrastructure of real-world customers. These development projects target the design and engineering of prototype cognitive assistants that afford managing data, information, and knowledge deluge in high-impact, dynamic, and uncertain environments and workflows. The domains of application of CSI technology cover a wide range, from patient and family engagement in hospitals, clinical decision-support systems, and risk prediction and mitigation in intensive care units, to military planning and operational technology, support tools for faster and deeper intelligence analysis, and interfaces for the supervisory control of teams of unmanned systems. At Aptima, Sylvain additionally provides expertise and leadership in human-centered design processes: human factors and cognitive systems engineering, design thinking, rapid prototyping, lean testing, and agile sprinting. Prior to joining Aptima, Sylvain conducted research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), focusing on designing and testing collaborative decision-support systems, specifically in aeronautics and military environments (astronaut training, unmanned systems, and missile defense).
Sylvain holds an S.M. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from MIT and a Diplôme d’Ingénieur from the Ecole Supérieure d’Electricité (Supélec, France). He is a member of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society, the Association for Computing Machinery, and the DoD Human Factors Engineering Technical Advisory Group. Sylvain is a full member of the SAE G-45 Human Systems Integration (HSI) Standards Committee.
