John Astor Cleveland Jr has had a diverse work experience in various companies and roles. John Astor started their career as a Senior Research Chemist at Dow Chemical in 1992, where they designed fiber-optic and acoustic probes for remote measurement of chemical dynamics and polymer properties. John Astor then joined Dow AgroSciences in 1992 as a Senior Scientist, managing discovery chemistry groups and developing analytical instrumentation and methods. In 2000, they became a Patent Counsel at Eli Lilly and Company, responsible for strategic patent planning and management of pharmaceutical assets. John Astor also provided client counseling on patent filing strategies and global research exemptions. From 2007 to 2009, they served as an Adjunct Professor at Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law. Later, they worked as a Senior Patent Attorney at AstraZeneca from 2010 to 2012, focusing on patent portfolio planning and global prosecution for pharmaceutical subject matter. John Astor then served as Of Counsel at Indiano & McConnell LLP from 2013 to 2016, providing intellectual property services to clients. Currently, they are the General Patent Counsel at Assembly Biosciences, Inc., where they oversee patent matters.

John Astor continued their studies and obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Chemistry from Cornell University.
