Christel du Preez

Since 2015 Christel has gained experience in water resource management issues and other environmental processes and applications. As a nature lover by heart, Christel believes that economic development can be achieved through sound sustainable environmental solutions – which is the core value of her career. Christel holds a masters degree in environmental sciences, as obtained from North West University (South Africa). Her thesis focussed on ecological processes of wetlands over an urban-rural gradient.

Since the start of her career in 2015 in Johannesburg, South Africa, she has been involved in a number of projects primarily focussing on the assessment of freshwater systems within South Africa over a variety of development spheres. Her skillset is inclusive of physical wetland and/or river delineation, assessment of the ecological state by investigating the vegetation composition, hydrological functioning and geomorphology of the watercourse, and application of an impact assessment methodology. As these reports were presented to local stakeholders, communities and councils, her role also included liaison with the various parties to ensure a transparent legislative process and to communicate on appropriate technical and commercial levels.

After relocating to Cape Town in 2018, Christel managed a small satellite consultancy office and team, with the focus of establishing its consultants in the local market. Freshwater ecological assessments was primarily undertaken as part of the consenting processes for large-scale renewable energy developments as well as residential estates. Christel joined the Bioresearches team (a Babbage company) in 2022. As a freshwater ecologist, she is involved in the compilation of ecological assessment studies, undertaking impact assessments and mitigation measure development, client liaison and advising in terms of relevant consenting legislation. With her passion for the environment, Christel aims to provide practical sustainable solutions to our clients.
