Jan van Kessel has a strong background in engineering and offshore technology. Jan started their career as an intern at GustoMSC | SBM Offshore, where they designed a novel pipelay derrick barge, later patented as the dual-draft vessel.
Jan then worked as a research engineer at Delft University of Technology & GustoMSC | SBM Offshore, where they successfully completed their PhD thesis on fluid-structure interaction of air cushion supported mega-floaters. Jan also secured funding for their research through academic and industry collaborations.
After their PhD, Jan joined GustoMSC as an Engineer in Product Development, where they developed a Sea Water Intake Riser system for wind turbine installation jack-ups. Jan also conducted research on Dynamic Positioning of vessels in Arctic conditions.
Jan then worked at SBM Offshore as a Senior Engineer Hydrodynamics, leading the hydrodynamic and mooring analysis for FPSOs. Jan also led the model testing campaign for FPSOs during this time.
Following their tenure at SBM Offshore, Jan joined Shell as a Senior Offshore Structures Engineer, providing technical support and leading activities for projects and assets in the field of risers, moorings, and hydrodynamics. Jan was also appointed as the Activity Lead for repair and rejuvenation at an onshore LNG facility.
In 2017, Jan became the Chairman of Offshore Technology at the Royal Institute for Engineers in the Netherlands (Koninklijk Instituut Van Ingenieurs/KIVI). Jan organized international symposia, lectures, and excursions to promote knowledge-sharing among professionals in the Dutch offshore industry and students. Prior to becoming Chairman, they served as the Vice Chairman of Offshore Technology from 2012 to 2017.
Jan's most recent role is as a Senior Engineer Floating City Development at Blue21. Jan provides consulting, performs and reviews structural and maritime engineering works for floating city development. Jan also contributes to research projects and strategy, and provides expert technical support in the field of moorings, hydrodynamics, fluid-structure interaction, and hydroelasticity.
Overall, Jan van Kessel possesses extensive expertise in engineering, hydrodynamics, moorings, and offshore structures. Jan has a strong research background and has actively contributed to the field through industry collaborations and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
Jan van Kessel's education history begins in 1999 when they enrolled at Delft University of Technology. Jan pursued a Master of Science degree in Marine Technology & Offshore Engineering and completed their studies in 2004.
During their time at Delft University, Jan van Kessel also engaged in further academic pursuits. From 2001 to 2003, they attended Erasmus University Rotterdam where they focused on economics, although the specific degree obtained is not mentioned.
After completing their Master's degree, Jan van Kessel continued their education at Delft University of Technology. Jan pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Offshore Engineering & Ship hydrodynamics and graduated from the program in 2009.
Overall, Jan van Kessel's education history showcases a strong foundation in the field of offshore engineering and ship hydrodynamics, complemented by a study of economics.
