Mary Nolan has a diverse work experience that spans over two decades. Mary has worked in various roles and positions, primarily in the field of UX research and design.
Mary started their career at ESB in 1998 as a Mechanical Engineer and later transitioned to the role of a Project Engineer. Mary worked in this capacity until 2005. In 2008, they rejoined ESB as a Technical Specialist, focusing on turbines. Mary then became a Project Director in ESB's Asset Development department from 2009 to 2012.
In 2016, Mary worked as a UX Researcher on a contract basis with Graphic Mint, an award-winning UX design agency. During their time there, they collaborated with clients and the UX design team to design, conduct, analyze, and report on UX research projects.
From 2017 to 2018, Mary worked as a UX Researcher at CarTrawler, where they conducted user research activities, generated insights using qualitative and quantitative methods, tested design prototypes, and collaborated with product managers and analysts.
Following their role at CarTrawler, Mary joined Udemy as a Senior UX Researcher in 2018. Their responsibilities included managing and executing research for multiple product teams, conducting research, synthesizing key findings, and prioritizing and executing multiple research projects simultaneously.
Currently, Mary is working at Bord Gáis Energy. Mary started as a Senior UX Researcher in 2023 and later became the Head of UX Research. In these roles, they support various teams and the wider business in optimizing the website and app for user needs. Their responsibilities include setting up research processes, conducting user testing, card sorting, accessibility assessment, facilitating workshops, and collaborating with stakeholders.

Mary Nolan obtained a Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) degree in Mechanical Engineering from University College Dublin in 1992-1996. Mary went on to pursue a Masters of Engineering Science (M.Eng.Sc.) degree at University College Dublin from 1996-1998, specializing in research on 'The Pre-Tempering of Two Tool Steels'. In 2013-2014, Mary completed a Level 8 CPD in Digital Media Production at Technological University Dublin, focusing on Web Application Development. Mary has also obtained various certifications in UX Design and related fields, such as Wireframing With Balsamiq MockUps and Foundations of UX: Making the Case for Usability Testing.
