Wenwu Shi, PhD, PE

Sr. Refractory Engineer at Boston Metal

Wenwu Shi, PhD, PE has worked in a variety of roles in the engineering field. In 2021, they began working as a Sr. Refractory Engineer at Boston Metal. From 2013 to 2021, they worked as a Sr. Research Engineer at Foseco, a division of Vesuvius PLC. In this role, they developed new recipes and improved current recipes of refractory products through design of experiments, studied the formation mechanism and effect of processing parameters, and led and participated in several new product introduction projects. Wenwu also worked on process development and engineering, improving the product consistency through data-driven six sigma and 8D PPS methodologies. From 2009 to 2013, they worked as a Graduate Research/Teaching Assistant at the University of Alabama, where they designed and optimized a chemical vapor deposition furnace for growth of high quality carbon nanotubes and graphene, studied deposition and growth mechanism of functional thin film, and improved capacity of carbon nanotubes supercapacitor by plasma treatment. In 2007, they were a Summer intern at QINGTONGXIA ALUMINUM GROUP CO, where they were tasked with collecting and organizing manufacturing data for daily reports, maintained continuous aluminum electrolysis, and worked on the continuous aluminum casting mill (foil and coil). In 2006, they were a Summer intern at CHINA-TIN INDUSTRY CO.

Wenwu Shi, PhD, PE has a strong educational background. Wenwu obtained a Bachelor of Engineering in Metallurgical Engineering from Central South University between 2004 and 2008. Wenwu then obtained a MS in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from The University of Alabama between 2009 and 2011. Wenwu then went on to obtain a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Metallurgical Engineering from The University of Alabama between 2009 and 2013. Additionally, they have obtained several certifications, such as IBM Machine Learning from Coursera in July 2022, Google Project Management from Google in December 2021, Data Analysis with Python from freeCodeCamp in July 2021, Professional Engineer (PE) from the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs in February 2021, IBM AI Engineering Specialization from Coursera in May 2020, Master Solidworks 2018 from Udemy in December 2019, OpenFoam Applied CFD from CFD Direct Limited in October 2019, Deep Learning from Coursera in December 2018, and Applied Data Science with Python from Coursera in November 2018.
