Michael Buono has a diverse range of work experience, starting with their role as a Tutor-Counselor for the SUNY Plattsburgh Upward Bound program in 2004. Michael then worked as a Cafe Supervisor for Borders from 2006 to 2009, where they demonstrated strong leadership skills and reduced employee turnover. In 2010, they served as an Inventory Supervisor for Borders Inc., and also worked as an Information Specialist/Consultant for the Marian Shrine Bookstore Project. From 2011 to 2012, they held multiple positions at the Patchogue-Medford Library, including Young Adult/Audio Visual Services Librarian and New Adult Services & Digital Strategist. Michael then moved on to work as a Teen Services Librarian at Sachem Public Library from 2012 to 2016. In 2016, they became an Adjunct Lecturer at Queens College, where they revised and executed various courses. Most recently, they worked as the Head of Reference and Patron Services at the Brentwood Public Library since 2017, overseeing a team of librarians and managing budgets for adult programs and services.
