James Smith began their professional career in 2014, when they took a Gap year at Harrow International School Bangkok as a student/intern. In 2015, they became a Cocktail Bartender at The Lion and Pheasant & The Boathouse Inn. In 2018, they worked as a Social Secretary at Vanbrugh College Rugby, a Department Representative at the University of York Students' Union, and a Company Owner & Director at The Cocktail Candle Company. In 2019, they were an Administrative & Operations Assistant at Intermusica Artists' Management, a Freelance Location Marshall & Production Runner at Warner Bros. Entertainment, and had a two-week work experience at Mad Dog 2020 Casting. In 2020, they were a Testing Co-Ordinator and Operational Servicing Assistant at England Rugby, and in 2021 they began working as an Events Coordinator & New Business Development at Butternut Box.

James Smith has a diverse educational background. From 2017 to 2019, they studied at the University of York, earning a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Music. Prior to that, they attended University College Roosevelt from 2015 to 2017, where they obtained a BA(Hons) Liberal Arts in Musicology, Rhetoric and Argumentation, and Research. Smith also holds a number of certifications, including a diploma in Pianoforte from the London College of Music Examinations (obtained in 2014), a Distinction, Grade 8 Trombone from Trinity College London (obtained in 2013), a Create a Social Media Campaign certification from the University of Leeds (obtained in 2020), and a First Class Dissertation (Socio-Musicology quantitative research essay into marginalisation, violence & disenfranchisement in London grime music) from the University of York (obtained in 2019).
