Alex Welch has a wide range of work experience. From 2021 to present, they have been working as a Chemical Process Engineer at CarbonCapture Inc. From 2016 to 2021, they completed their PhD in Applied Physics from Harry Atwater's research group at Caltech. Alex'sresearch focused on electrochemical CO2 reduction in collaboration with the Joint Center of Artificial Photosynthesis and the Liquid Sunlight Alliance. Alex also developed a nanoporous gold catalyst for highly selective (99%) electrochemical CO2 reduction to CO. From 2015 to 2016, they worked as a Research Assistant in the Prof. Jen Dionne MSE Research Group. From 2012 to 2014, they worked as a Research Assistant in the Yi Cui Research Group. From 2014 to 2015, they worked as a Research Assistant in the Ursula Keller's Research Group. From 2013 to 2014, they worked as a Research Assistant in the QuantumScape. From 2010 to 2013, they worked as a Programmer in Infinera. In 2010, they worked as an Intern in the Natural Resources Defense Council, where they attended and recorded meeting notes between Franz Matzner, Legislative Director of the Climate Center, and various environmental groups and senators’ staff. Alex also participated in visibility campaigns against the Murkowski resolution in front of the Hart Senate building and was interviewed by Bill Lambrecht from the St. Louis Post. In 2009, they worked as an Intern in Infinera, where they worked for the Network Systems and Analysis group on various projects.
Alex Welch attended Menlo School from 2005 to 2012. Alex then went on to Stanford University, where they earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Physics from 2012 to 2016. In 2016, they also completed the Summer Institute of General Management at Stanford. Alex then went on to Caltech, where they earned a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Applied Physics in 2021.
