Kathryn Dungy, who is currently an associate professor of Latin American and Caribbean history at Saint Michael’s College, brings a wealth of experience in higher and international education to CIEE. A world traveler since the age of six months, Kathryn has traveled to 52 countries and territories and has lived in Nigeria, Puerto Rico, and Spain. In addition, she is an alum of CIEE’s semester study abroad program in Santiago, Dominican Republic.
Kathryn specializes in the study of race, class, and gender in the Atlantic World, exploring the concept of freedom in the midst of slave societies in the Caribbean, Latin America, and U.S. She has published a book that examines a distinctive population of free people of color in 19th-century Puerto Rico; has contributed to numerous academic journals, edited volumes, and encyclopedias; and has spoken at a wide range of conferences and scholarly meetings. She previously taught at the University of Vermont and the New College of Florida, and has served on the board of directors for the Tampa Bay History Center.
Kathryn holds a doctorate and master’s degree in history from Duke University and a bachelor’s degree in history and sociology from Spelman College.
