Gary Lewis Jr. has extensive work experience in law enforcement and public safety. Gary currently serves as the Chief of Police for the City of Bexley. Prior to this, they held the position of Assistant Vice President Operations/Chief of Police at the University of Louisville from 2020 to 2022, and Director of Public Safety/Chief of Police from 2018 to 2022. Before joining the University of Louisville, Lewis worked as the Executive Director/Chief of Police at Cleveland State University from 2015 to 2018. Gary also served in the Ohio State Highway Patrol for over 20 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Commander. During their time with the highway patrol, Lewis held various roles including Division Spokesperson and Public Information Officer. Gary also had a stint as a Senior Director of Media and Public Relations at The Ohio State University from 2013 to 2015. Additionally, Lewis worked as an Adjunct Instructor at ITT Technical Institute from 2010 to 2013.

Gary Lewis Jr. has a diverse education history. In 1988-1989, they attended The Art Institutes and obtained an Associate Degree in Visual Communications. Moving forward, in 2003, they completed a program at the FBI National Academy #212, focusing on Executive Leadership. In 2006-2010, they furthered their education at Franklin University, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Public Safety Management. Following this, they pursued a Master's Degree in Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement Administration at Michigan State University from 2012 to 2013. Finally, in 2017, they attended the Harvard Kennedy School, specializing in Crisis Leadership in Higher Education and completing a certificate program in Executive Leadership.
