L. David Patterson has extensive work experience in various roles. Starting in 2000, they worked as an Acquisitions/Dispositions Analyst at Westwood Financial Corp until 2005. From 2001 to 2011, they served as a Branch Office Manager at World Group Securities, overseeing 25 Field Representatives and managing two registered securities branches. In 2010, they established The Patterson Group, where they worked as a Business & Financial Consultant. In 2012, they became an Investment Advisor Representative at Transamerica Financial Advisors, Inc. In 2013, L. David Patterson was elected as the first African American City Treasurer in Hawthorne, serving until 2020. In 2021, they joined the City of Carson, California as the Chief Deputy Treasurer. Additionally, in 2020 and 2022, they held the positions of City Council Member and Mayor Pro Tem in Hawthorne, respectively.

L. David Patterson obtained a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration/Entrepreneurial Studies from the University of Southern California in the years 1999-2001. L. David then pursued an Associate of Arts degree in English from El Camino College between 1996 and 1999. Later, in 2012-2013, they obtained a Master of Science degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from Capella University. In progress, they are currently pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Business Psychology from The Chicago School, starting in 2016 and expected to finish in 2024. Additionally, Patterson obtained a certificate in Board Governance from the African American Board Leadership Institute (AABLI) in 2017. L. David also holds certifications as a Real Estate Broker from the California Department of Real Estate (obtained in July 2005) and as an Insurance Agent in Accident, Health, Life, Variable Life, and Variable Annuities from the California Department of Insurance (obtained in July 2002). It is not specified when they obtained their Investment Advisor certification from FINRA.
