Jill Gemmill

Associate Vice President, Research Computing & Data at Clemson University

Jill Gemmill has a diverse work experience spanning over several years. Jill has held various roles in different organizations, demonstrating their versatility and expertise.

Jill started their career as a Systems Analyst at the UAB Vision Science Research Center in 1983, where they developed software for experimental control and data analysis. Jill later joined the UAB Department of Neurobiology as a Technical Services Manager, where they founded and directed the Three-Dimensional Imaging & Computer Graphics Facility, creating software systems for biological research.

In 1997, Jill joined UAB Data Communications/Network Services as a Senior Network Applications Specialist. Jill implemented network performance measurement systems and managed web cache for increased Internet throughput. Jill also developed a cost model for a significant network infrastructure upgrade.

Jill then transitioned to UAB Academic Computing in 2000, becoming the Assistant Director and Research Assistant Professor. Here, they established the Department of IT Academic Computing and managed staff and budgets for research support. Jill also served as an alternate professor.

In 2005, Jill worked as a consultant for Polycom, training staff in LDAP technologies and contributing to the design of ITU H. 350 implementation. Jill also took on roles at EDUCAUSE NET@EDU as an Advisory Board member and at Internet2 as a member, leading the Video Development initiative and contributing to teleconferencing and middleware activities.

From 2006 to 2007, Jill held roles at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) as the Data Security Officer, responsible for data protection policies and system monitoring for potential threats. Jill reduced system remediation time and developed the university's first online security training course.

Jill's most recent work experience is at Clemson University, where they joined in 2007 as the Executive Director, leading research support and infrastructure development. Jill also served as the Associate Vice President for Research Computing & Data and the Chief Technology Officer for Middleware. Jill successfully built collaborations, implemented projects, and won federally funded awards. Jill was also heavily involved in research and teaching as a Research Professor.

Jill also holds an MS degree in Computer and Information Science from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, which they completed from 1981 to 1984. Their bachelor's degree, a BA in History, was earned from Antioch University between 1968 and 1972.
