Colin Doyle, PhD

Principal Scientist at Floodbase

Colin Doyle, PhD, has a diverse work experience in various scientific and research roles. Colin started their career as a Foundations in Biology Teaching Assistant at the Biology Department of Georgetown University in 2012. In this role, they assisted in teaching laboratory components, graded assignments and tests, and coordinated tutoring for students.

In 2011, Colin worked as a Research Assistant at Georgetown University, where they focused on investigating ancient Maya agriculture and the factors influencing the collapse of ancient Maya civilizations in Belize. Colin conducted field research, collected and analyzed soil cores, performed tree surveys, and mapped distributions using remotely sensed data.

From 2013 to 2015, Colin held multiple roles at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. As a Research Scientist, they worked on improving flood monitoring, modeling, and prediction using satellite earth observations. Colin also developed a near real-time flood disaster assessment system to map flood extent and impacts, and estimate socio-economic damage in Southeast Asia. In their role as DEVELOP Center Lead, Colin utilized NASA Earth observations for remote sensing studies and created near real-time flood impact mapping products for disaster relief along the Mekong River.

At The University of Texas at Austin, Colin served as a Graduate Research Assistant from 2015 to 2019. In this role, they studied past and present environments and human-environment interactions under the supervision of Dr. Timothy Beach and Dr. Luzzadder-Beach in the Department of Geography and the Environment.

Since 2016, Colin has been working at Floodbase, starting as a Director of Technology and currently serving as the Principal Scientist. As the Director of Technology, they led the development of a near real-time and historic flood analysis platform, utilizing cutting-edge scientific analysis and state-of-the-art technology. In their current role as the Principal Scientist, Colin leads research and prototyping of new technologies, data, and scientific approaches for flood risk calculation and real-time flood tracking in insurance. Colin specifically focuses on developing flood parametric insurance products and other insurance sectors using innovative scientific methods.

Overall, Colin Doyle, PhD, has a strong background in scientific research, remote sensing, flood monitoring, and environmental studies. Colin'swork experience spans across academia, government agencies like NASA, and the private sector in insurance and technology development at Floodbase.

Colin Doyle, PhD, has pursued an extensive education in the field of Geography and the Environment. Colin began their academic journey at Georgetown University from 2009 to 2013, where they earned a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Environmental Biology.

Following this, Colin joined The University of Texas at Austin, where they further specialized in Geography and the Environment. From 2015 to 2017, they obtained a Master of Arts (MA) degree, delving deeper into their chosen field of study. Colin continued their academic pursuits at the same institution and completed their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Geography and the Environment from 2017 to 2022.
