Johan Rockström is Chief Scientist at Conservation International. He also serves as co-director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, one of Europe’s leading centers for climate change and sustainability research.
Rockström provides strategic scientific guidance in support of Conservation International’s mission to combat climate change by protecting forests and oceans; applying innovation to conservation science; and developing holistic, scalable models of sustainability.
Rockström’s work has served as a guide for sustainable development at the United Nations, governments, non-governmental organizations and companies around the world, and his research has been published in more than 100 scientific journals. He is the recipient of several awards and honors, including the German Environmental Award and the Zoological Society of London Award for Conservation Innovation.
Before joining Conservation International and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, Rockström served as the founding director of the Stockholm Resilience Centre and the director of the Stockholm Environment Institute. He has a Ph.D. in ecology from Stockholm University.
