Lynn Mackey was elected as the Contra Costa County Superintendent of Schools in November 2018. A lifelong resident of Contra Costa County, Lynn Mackey’s education experience influenced her career as an educator and desire to foster supportive education environments for students of all backgrounds.
Encouraged by the support she received as a GED student, Lynn Mackey began her career in education as a GED teacher and later a curriculum specialist for county schools and detention facilities. Her encounter with adversity as a student inspired her to support efforts for equity in education at every opportunity. One of her proudest moments as an educator is witnessing her graduated GED students succeed in the community.
As Superintendent, Mackey believes there is always work to be done to create supportive school environments for students facing difficult circumstances. Providing all students with opportunity and access is essential to student success, and Mackey looks forward to each day as an educator.
Mackey is a seasoned teacher and administrator with more than 25 years of experience working directly with the county superintendent at the Contra Costa County Office of Education.
She became the principal of Contra Costa County’s Court and Community Schools, and in 2012 and 2018 was awarded Administrator of the Year for her work with some of the county’s most vulnerable students. Prior to the election, Mackey was CCCOE’s deputy superintendent, where she also directed the agency’s Educational Services department.
Superintendent Lynn Mackey holds a Master's degree from Cal State East Bay in Educational Leadership and a Bachelors degree in English from Mills College.
