Job Title: Engineering Manager

Report To: Head of Engineering

Job Location: London & Remote

Employment Status: Full Time

Salary: Competitive and market based

Who is ControlPlane?

We are a London based cloud native technology company, helping to keep people safe online. We work to secure the building blocks of the internet by offering consulting, training, and products related to Kubernetes and cloud native security and operations.

ControlPlane’s priority is to continue to be a leader in the Kubernetes DevSecOps space, by securing the next generation of software systems and providing a clear, risk-based adoption guide for organisations looking to implement best practices.

Trusted by Google Cloud, UK Home Office, JPMC, among many others, our clients are world leading organisations.

What We’re Looking For in an Engineering Manager

Our Engineering Manager believes in helping our customers and colleagues on their cloud native security journey. The role will suit an experienced engineer with the ability to create and manage exceptional teams, with some knowledge of Kubernetes and associated technologies, who wants to stay hands-on with the latest in cloud security.

You will represent the technical and cultural values of Control Plane, leading our team by example in the complex and fast-changing world of cloud native technology.

We are looking for a coach and mentor for our industry-leading subject matter experts to help them in their daily challenges, to understand and support their roles at customer sites, and to manage and hold them accountable for their responsibilities.

The role is a mix of leadership and management: you will guide engineers through their career pathway, and also be accountable for your own quarterly objectives.

This is a remote position, and when offices reopen we invite you to spend a few days a month in-person at our London office: this is optional and we aim to be entirely flexible to your needs. As a leader in the cloud native community there are opportunities for international travel.

Roles, Responsibilities and requirements of our Engineering Manager

  • Report to the Heads of Department to ensure voices are heard at all levels of the business
  • Nurture and grow our diverse and highly skilled engineers to deliver impactful and valuable work to our clients
  • Be an inspirational, compassionate leader and manager, espousing continuous improvement principles
  • Day to day support of staff: run one on ones and unblock ad hoc issues
  • Lead by example: live and breathe our cultural values
  • Facilitate delivery by enabling others to make technical decisions
  • Ensure engineers exercise the highest and best use of their time to maximise individual satisfaction
  • Work alongside the team to facilitate open source projects
  • Manage internal company initiatives to ensure the smooth operation of the business
  • Assist in squad formation and scheduling of work
  • Indirectly deliver value to our clients by efficient team operation
  • Shape our management best practices to attract the best talent

Our Engineering Manager Will Have These Preferred or Specific Skills

  • Experience managing or mentoring high-performing teams in a culture of psychological safety
  • 5+ years of industry experience at a senior level
  • Kindness, compassion, and a human-centric approach
  • Passion for helping others to achieve ambitious goals while avoiding burnout
  • Proven leadership skills and evidence of engagement with relevant communities
  • Experience analysing general technical documentation, developing internal processes, and cataloguing information
  • Exceptional communication skills – excellent English language skills at a native or fluent level
  • Ability to act with total discretion and diplomacy, and to show sound judgement and leadership in responding to complex circumstances
  • Consultancy mindset; continually challenges the status quo and investigates problems to identify ways in which we can improve
  • Enthusiasm, consummate professionalism, and excellent attention to detail
  • A plus: Kubernetes and container knowledge
  • Report to the Heads of Department to ensure voices are heard at all levels of the business
  • Nurture and grow our diverse and highly skilled engineers to deliver impactful and valuable work to our clients
