Saumalu Mataafa has a diverse work experience spanning multiple industries and roles. They began their career as a Student at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in 2009 and then worked as a Research Associate at Lockheed Martin from 2014 to 2015. In 2017, they worked as a Legislative Analyst at the Hawaii State Legislature and later as a Research and Policy Analyst at the County of Maui from 2017 to 2018. In 2019, they served as a Policy and Legislative Liaison at the Maui County Office of the Mayor before transitioning to the role of Executive Assistant at the Department of Management at the County of Maui. Additionally, they also served as a Commissioner at the Kaho’olawe Island Reserve Commission. As of 2023, they hold the position of Deputy Director of Housing and Human Concerns at the County of Maui.

Saumalu Mataafa completed their high school education at Lahainaluna High School from 2006 to 2009, earning a high school diploma. They then attended Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University from 2009 to 2013, where they obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautics. Saumalu subsequently pursued higher education at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University from 2013 to 2015, completing a Master of Science degree in Human Factors & Systems. Additionally, Saumalu obtained several certifications throughout their educational journey, including the High Performance Leadership Master Certificate from the Professional Development Academy in July 2020, the Ka Ipu Kukui Fellows Program from Ka Ipu Kukui Fellows in May 2019, and the McNair Scholar designation from McNair Scholars Program- Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in May 2013.
